Position Summary

The Assistant, Community Health is responsible for assisting and mentoring a group of Community Health Workers (CHWs)/volunteers/female health workers that provides basic health, hygiene and nutrition services and health promotion to targeted communities. The Community Health Assistant works under the guidance of a Community Health Supervisor, and collaborates with other health professionals, such as Doctors, Nurses, and Midwives. The Community Health Assistant is responsible for helping the Community Health Supervisor in planning, organizing, and monitoring the community health activities, and ensuring the quality and safety of the health services. The Community Health Assistant also participates in the assessment, coordination, and evaluation of the health situation and the health needs of the target population.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assist and mentor the Community Health Workers/volunteers/ female health workers and ensure their motivation, performance, and well-being. 
  • Ensure CHWs/volunteers/FHWs have all the tools and supplies available required for their work. 
  • Help the Community Health Supervisor in planning and organizing the community health activities, such as outreach visits, health campaigns, and community meetings, and ensure their alignment with the project objectives, indicators, and budget. 
  • Assist the Community Health Supervisor in implementing and overseeing the community health activities, and ensure the provision of quality and timely health services, according to the national and international standards and guideline 
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluating community health activities and collecting and reporting relevant data and information. 
  • Visit, monitor, and evaluate CHWs/volunteers/FHWs by accompanying them on home visits and health education sessions, observe them while conducting sessions and guide them on best practices, communication skills and conducting question and answer sessions.   
  • Support the Community Health Supervisor in managing and maintaining the community health equipment, supplies, and drugs, and ensure their proper storage, usage, and disposal, and report any shortages or damages. 
  • Supervise clinical services in places where CHWs are involved in services provision for common morbidities and basic first aid such as ICCM plus and community IMNCI. 
  • Participate in the assessment and analysis of the health situation and the health needs of the target population and identify and prioritize the gaps and challenges. 
  • Support preparations for Global celebration days such as Immunization week, world malaria day and menstrual hygiene days at community level. 
  • Support CHWs/ volunteers/FHWs, coordinate activities at the local level and maintain cooperation with other institutions at community level such as the village council, community elders, traditional healers etc.   
  • Abide by the humanitarian principles, the code of ethics, and the policies and procedures of the organization.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Typically, minimum of High school diploma or equivalent from a recognized institution. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. 
  • Certificate or diploma in community health or related field from a recognized institution, where applicable 
  • At least two years of relevant experience as a community health worker or supervisor in a health facility or a community health team, preferably in a low-resource or humanitarian context. 
  • Proficient in the use of community health equipment, supplies, and drugs, and familiar with the basic health services and protocols. 
  • Able to plan, implement, and monitor community health activities independently and effectively. 
  • Able to supervise and support a diverse and multidisciplinary team of community health workers, and to motivate, mentor, and coach them. 
  • Able to communicate and collaborate with other humanitarian actors and target populations from diverse backgrounds and cultures. 
  • Committed to humanitarian values and principles, and respectful of the dignity and rights of the patients and the communities. 

Additional Technical or Language Requirements

The applicant should be able to communicate clearly in Arabic and English with a health education background and be capable of conducting frequent visits to the field in A l Dhale’e governorate.
